DC Comic Book of the Week: Justice League #5

So the DC book of the week is by far Justice League 5. I know it might seem cliche that the biggest title for DC is my book of the week and I can likely promise that for February when JL 6 comes out that will be too, but understand this book is unreal. Geoff Johns is incredible and Jim Lee is kicking-ass with the art. The story line is the perfect book to infant DC readers getting you into the main characters, weaknesses, showing each for how special they are, and integrating the team element into a great title, so without further ado here is the review.

SPOILERS BELOW!!!
We last left off after issue 4 seeing the first appearance of Darkseid who is a certifiable bad-ass. He starts this issue continuing his beat-down of the still untitled Justice League. Superman and the Flash are rudely introduced to the Omega Beams (evil red lasers that shoot out of Darkseid's face and have a nasty homing system built in, so yea they can't miss). The Flash is able to phase through an ally of Darkseid's making a henchman get his ass killed. Supes is not so lucky taking a big hit to the back, and subsequently being abducted Wizard of Oz style being carried off by another evil henchman.

Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) takes the fight to Darkseid throwing down viciously and getting wrecked. His arm is broken in two places and Darkseid absorbs the blows of the Green Constructs like he is being hit by a pillow. Batman stops Hal from getting himself killed and then gave me a mouth dropping shocker. Batman unmasks and explains everything about who he is, his name, and why he does what he does to Green Lantern who doesn't reciprocate by revealing himself. That was a huge shock, I never expected that so early in the new series.

The plan Batman creates with GL is for GL to rally the troops while the unmasked, uncaped Caped-Crusader goes to rescue Superman. Batman allows himself to be captured and taken away by another flying monkey thing, while the Green Lantern gets the other members of the new "team" together to distract Darkseid, and take the fight to his front door. When Batman arrives at the citadel or thing that Darkseid is living in he goes through a red portal to end up on Apokolips, Darkseid's home world. The surprised Bruce Wayne standing looking at this wasteland is the last page of this monumental issue.

Personally I can't recommend this book enough. If you don't buy it, you are a very silly individual. This is a gem of a title containing DC's finest, about DC's version of the Avengers, all wrapped up and written by one of the best comic writers writing books. Need I continue?
