Golden Globes Live Blog

8:00pm- Golden Globes open up with the amazing Ricky Gervais. And yes, he is still ranking on The Tourist.

8:00pm- Christopher Plummer wins best Supporting Actor. Yeah...he was also awesome in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Umm....why is it that listening to older actor's acceptance speeches is like being water-boarded? Nicole is snoring......

8:15pm- Laura Dern wins Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series. Dr. Sattler looks hot. And I cared more about seeing Mila Kunis' nip through her dress than Ashton's haircut. And I think Nicole and Dan agree!

8:20pm- Downton Abbey wins best Mini Series. Teleprompter  for Rob Lowe & Julianne Moore screwed up. God I love technology...and live TV.

8:24pm- Kate Winslet wins best actress in a mini series. Kate wins everything because of two reasons: one is that she awesome and two James Cameron owns Hollywood and rules it with an iron fist.

8:35pm- Best Actor in a  TV Drama goes to Kelsey Grammer for Boss. As a Breaking Bad fan my heart is crushed. But I hear great things about Boss so I look forward to watching it in its entirety.

8:40pm- Homeland wins for best TV drama. I NEED TO SEE THIS SHOW!!!

8:45pm- Best Original Score goes to Ludovic Bourcic (sp?)....umm...show of hands of people who care about this category unless Howard Shore or Hans Zimmer is in it?

8:50pm- Best Original Song goes to Madonna. She is as immortal as Hulk Hogan. Seriously.

8:52pm- I don't know who that is but her dress is horrible. It was like a sleeveless Snuggie!

9:00pm- Catherine McPhee...marry me.

9:00pm Idris Elba wins Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini Series for Luther

9:01pm- SETH ROGAN IS STILL FUNNY! KATE BECKENSALE IS STILL HOT! and Michelle Williams wins for Best Performance for an Actress in a Mini Series for My Week with Marilyn

9:10pm- Peter Dinklage wins for Best Supporting Actor for Game of Thrones. You all should worship him.

9:15pm- Best Animated Feature Film award goes to The Adventures of Tintin. Spielberg is the most powerful Jew since Jesus.

9:20pm- Woody Allen wins Best Screenplay for Midnight in Paris. Woody couldn't except the award in person because he is picking up chicks at an elementary school.

9:25pm- Jessica Lange wins Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series for American Horror Story.

9:30pm- Best Foreign Film goes to the film The Separation.  *insert inappropriate joke here*

9:35pm- Dustin Hoffman is the man. He made Tootsie! If you haven't seen Tootsie.....then fuck you.

9:35pm- Claire Danes wins the award for Best Actress in a TV Series Drama for Homeland.

9:45pm- PENIS JOKE!

9:45pm-Matt LeBlanc wins Best Actor in a TV Series Comedy. His face was like "I WON AN AWARD AND I'M NOT ON FRIENDS ANYMORE?!?!"

9:50pm- Octavia Spencer wins actress Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. Someone literally screamed her name at the top of their lungs like they watching the NBA playoffs at a barber shop.

10:00pm- Sydney..................................you.......................................space.........................your.................................words................................so............................................far............................apart.......................you..................douche.

10:05pm- Morgan Freeman.........you're brilliant.

10:15pm- Martin Scorcese wins Best Director for Hugo. His eyebrows have accepted the award on his behalf.

10:20pm- Best TV Series Comedy or Musical goes to Modern Family......I'm Spanish and I have no idea what's going on. But Sofia Vergara is hot.

10:26pm- nope...not posting this...honestly... it's honestly a waste of my time.

10:35pm- Meryl Streep wins. Everything. I'm surprised she hasn't won Best Actor yet...but she will.

10:40pm- Jane Fonda....wanna go out on a date?

10:40pm- The Artist wins for Best Musical. I sigh deeply because as Editor of TV/Film I am obliged to watch this film. I don't want to. But I have to. Chances are I'll eat my words because I have a very accurate trend of hating some movies before I see them then becoming very embarrassed when I actually like it.

10:50pm- George Clooney wins Best Actor in a Drama. He's the reason why Meryl Streep will never win Best Actor.

10:55pm- The Descendants wins Best Drama. Fox Searchlight puts out good shit.

SEX...Now Watch The First Five Minutes of "Haywire"

Haywire (also known as Bourne Identity with a vagina) comes out in a week and if you're craving some spy thriller action, perhaps the first five mintues of the movie will sate your appetite until next week. Gina Carano, in all of her MMA sexiness, goes all apeshit in a coffee shop.

You have to watch Channing Tatum, well, be Channing Tatum, but the end result is oh so gratifying. I'm a fan of Soderbergh's work and Haywire looks pretty damn slick. Notice I said "looks pretty damn slick". Soderbergh is an awesome director, but his last few flicks have been lacking a bit.

This clip is US only unfortunately seeing as its a Hulu exclusive. We will have a review for "Haywire" up next week, in the meantime lets hope the entire movie is as incredibly violent as the first five minutes. Click play...you know you want to.

Verizon Wireless Requires 4G Devices

Verizon Wireless Associate Director of Device Marketing Keith Lampron, told CNet that all new devices that come to the Verizon Network this year are mandatorily required to have 4G capability. Not sure exactly why because Verizon has said its 4G network will not be completed until 2013 and they've also had 3 major network outages just this year. But looking on the bright side, I assume this means we have a 4G iPhone coming in 2012. (psyched)

CES Rundown: Smart TVs, OLED and 3D

A major part of CES is always the unveiling of the new TVs. What new advancements can they come up with this year? Consumers were wowed the past few years with the major push towards 3D technology. This year 3D seems to be on the backburner. OLED screens seen to be on every manufacturers lineup, and the new focus for these flat screen panels this year is the integration of “Smart TVs”.

These new “Smart TVs” are integrated with gestures/voice commands and social integration. It seems the TV manufacturers are going to route of the new trends, set by cellphone and game developers, with hands free control. Many of the new panels will be able to be commanded using simple voice controls. Gestures are also being used to control the set, rendering a remote obsolete. Companies have come to realize that social media is one of the biggest markets. Many models of the past years have already included social media on the displays. This year the companies are going for even more integration. Chatting and up to the minute updates on your social media accounts during a television program, these are part of the new social integration these new panels will possess.

Comic Book of The Day: Uncanny X-Force #19.1

Uncanny X-Force #19.1 is today's comic book of the day, and when you're done reading it you'll have one very simple question on your mind, as I know I did.

Where was the X-Force?

Don't get me wrong, this book is worth the read, but I personally hate when you have a book who's title means little to nothing in comparison to what's inside. Anyway, Marvel's had this "thing" going on where they add decimals to their titles. 19.1 is a clear cut example, as were any other titles you may have seen (Feat Itself, for example, had Issues 7, 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3).

The reasoning is simple. It happens after the main issue (in this case, #19), but is off to the side and meant to happen before the next issue in the timeline. When you read this issue, you have to take this into consideration, as that is exactly what has happened here.

SPOILER BELOW

Issue #19.1 is all about the Age of Apocalypse. If you read Uncanny X-force #19, you know that Jean Grey and Sabretooth went back to their own universe, the Age of Apocalypse (further referred to as AOA), leaving Nightcrawler behind. The issue picks up right at that point, marking the return of Jean Grey.

To cut the issue down to a bare-bones plot, Jean Grey had picked up something telepathically while in our own Universe. She had picked up on the events of House Of M, rather that the Scarlet Witch had removed a majority of the mutant gene from Earth. Jean had proposed they use the body and dead mind of their Scarlet Witch, reaching out and controlling her telepathically to have the same effect in the AOA and save Humanity.

The end result?

Jean is the only one who loses her powers, and William Stryker (You did watch X-men 2: X-men United, right?) tricks Jean into destroying a small island where mutants and humans are living. It isn't clear on whether or not the island is 100% in either race, but judging by Jean's reaction I'd say they were mutants who were against mutantkind and trying to save humanity.

While this book had next to nothing to do with the X-Force, I highly recommend this book. After looking ahead at Marvel's future releases, there will be a mini-series set in the Age of Apocalypse which, after reading this, I will be picking up to read. This was one of those books that really got me interested, because it's not a universe I'm used to, and I want to see where the writers will take it. After all, there are endless unused possibilities, origins, and plot twists that they can touch upon as they write this story, and you can safely expect the unexpected!

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Is Coming Out. We Promise.

Ghost Recon has been in development for what seems like forever, and yes, you will have to wait a bit longer for your dose of future soldiering.Ubisoft has just confirmed that they will in fact be pushing the release date from March to May 22 in North America (May 24th Europe). For those of you pining over some Ubsifot shooter action, you've waited this long, why not a couple of more months?

Ubisoft has taken their sweet time getting their two most beloved shooter franchises (Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon. R6 Vegas is one of my favorite games)and in a world that seems to be dominated by Call of Duty's and Battlefields, another delay doesn't seem ideal. We're not sure what the hold up is, but these things happen for a reason. If the whole thing feels like "a little late to the party", I can see that. We've been seeing footage of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier for the past three E3's, it would be nice to play it.

Ubisoft did state that they will be releaseing a multiplayer beta in April, which is nice because at this point I think people are tired of hearing about it. And contrary to what was previouly rumored, a PC version of the game does exist. There was some concern that Ghost Recon Online may have taken its place. The whole idea that Ubisoft would abandon the PC market for a game like Ghost Recon: Future Soldier seems absurd. Check the video below for the multiplayer walkthrough.

Comic Book of The Day: Red Lanterns #5

The Red Lanterns are a fairly new creation that came into life only a few short years ago, but their popularity and fame have given them their own title.

Recapping recent past events, Atrocitus has his entire corps on a planet where they mumble and stumble like a bunch of morons with no capability of thought. Atrocitus has been using the dead body of Krona (former Guardian of the Universe) as his pulpit to confess and confide his secrets with. At the end of issue 4, Krona is missing. Atrocitus blames his fellow corpsmen Bleez (whom he recently gave her intelligence back) of stealing the body. Then issue 5 happened.

SPOILERS BELOW

Like any good story, Red Lanterns 5 picks up where 4 left off and Atrocitus is pissed. He immediately attacks Bleez accusing her of trickery and deception (not to mention the whole stealing the dead Guardian bit). The two of them fight for a short time and then Bleez asks the question of what if Krona is not dead? This relaxes Atrocitus somewhat but he still falls into shock thinking Krona could be alive.

Meanwhile, the other members of the Red Lanterns that Atrocitus threw into the blood ocean to restore their memories are beginning to come about. They look to each other with anger and hatred (how surprising) but eventually fall in line with Atrocitus. The Red Lanterns decide that their mission will be either recovering Krona’s dead body, or finding him and killing him again. Atrocitus ends this by chanting the Red Lantern oath.

Back on Earth a small sub-plot has been brewing. A human whose grandfather was murdered by a thug has been feuding with his brother over how to act. I myself thought the one brother full with anger and fueled by rage was going to become the first human Red Lantern.

I was wrong.

His calmer brother, John Moore, had much more rage built up inside of him that he never revealed. Even when his brother was beaten to death by police; he did nothing to stop it. A red power ring appears on Earth to provide John with a red power ring making him unofficially the first human Red Lantern.

Red Lanterns is a title that could be hit or miss when it comes to purchasing a new title of DC’s New 52. The Krona story line and the introduction of a new Lantern all make me excited for issue 6. Bring on the next one!

Comic Book of The Day: Uncanny X-Men #4

X-Men left off with the end of the “Sinister” three part arc. The X-Men find themselves at a bit of a crossroads with the citizens afraid of what they are capable of, but X-Leader Scott Summers (aka Cyclops) believes this to be beneficial, if humans fear the X-Men, they won’t harm mutants. That brings the X-Reader to issue 4.

SPOILERS BELOW

Issue 4 is one of those one-shot books that are used to keep the title coming out monthly while the writers get ready for the next big arc. The story focuses around a member of the Phalanx, the alien life forms who try to take over the galaxy through the use of a hivemind and turn everybody robotic. This member was captured and systematically tortured by Mr. Sinister for an unspecified amount of time. I’m quite sure unspeakable things were done here to this member of would be conqueror people.

After his escape, and repeated failures to contact his larger collective, he builds a one man Phalanx army made out of himself and people he killed. This is, of course, where the X-Men arrive to stop him. The real tragedy comes when the Phalanx member discovers that he is the last remaining member of his people. That is the true reason he couldn’t contact the hivemind collective. Upon discovery of this, he lowers his shields and allows himself to be killed the X-Men’s attacks.

With this book being a one-shot, it technically isn’t going to have any bearing on the rest of Marvel, or even the X-Men. It’s used to either introduce something that later will be very important, or what I believe to be the reason this time, bridge a gap between two arcs. In this case a villain is taken and shown to be a sympathetic character that I felt sorry for when he was killed. Where my curiosity lies is how does Mr.Sinister benefit from what information he obtained from the Phalanx member? Will this book have any lasting effects on Marvel or the near future? In my personal opinion no, but that remains to be seen.

Why the Dark Knight Ruined Superhero Movies Until The End of Time

...until Chris Nolan makes another superhero movie.

It's over. The sad fact is this: there are two kinds of superhero movies. Movies that came before The Dark Knight and we thought they they were neato cool, the bees knees, and all that shit. Then the movies that came after that are just a steaming pile of feces compared to the might and glory of The Dark Knight.  Once The Dark Knight Rises releases, I fear the end of good superhero movies will be upon us. 2012 truly marks the end of civilization.

TDK did something that few hero movies have done before. It made it believable. It wasn't so outlandish that you had to bend reality a lot. Batman's struggle against corruption in Gotham had consequences. The villains that he faced weren't just madmen bent on taking over the world, they had philosophies that they stood behind, even though they were misguided.

A lot of the movies that Marvel has pumped out has been very formulaic.  Each followed the Iron Man recipe. Thor and Captain America just felt like the same flick. Fantastic Four was like that too. The heroes are too busy fighting amongst themselves the majority of the movie. In recent years the only two Marvel movies I truly enjoyed were The Incredible Hulk and The Punisher (the Thomas Jane version).

Superhero movies need to be brought down to Earth before a serious fanbase can get behind them. So far comic movies have been summer box office fodder.  Shallow story and horrible plot progression seem to be the trend. It might be the difference between Marvel and DC movies. Or it might just be the way the movies are filmed. Wolverine should have been a hard R rated film. No way a character that has claws shed so little blood in a film. Seriously. I'm hoping that 'The Wolverine' and 'Deadpool' change that and get down and dirty. I enjoyed The Punisher and the Blade trilogy because they didn't pull any punches.
"I'm thinking if a number between one and awesome!"

Maybe the big difference is Christopher Nolan. The guy can't make crap, it's not in his DNA. I was very hurt when I found out the Darren Aronofsky (director of Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream) wasn't going to be at the helm of 'The Wolverine'. Reason being that the man can't not make an R rated film that makes you so depressed you want to die.  That sense of despair is basically what the next stage in Wolverine's life becomes.

What I want is directors of comic book movies not to take me as a fool and accept it because they have flashy special effects and a hero that is literally larger than life. Iron Man 3 can delve into Tony Stark's alcoholism, Thor could view a little more of his arrogance (a three day field trip on Earth and a roll in the hay with Natalie Portman seems like a cheap change of heart). Spider-Man (at least the first one) showed a hero that was human but acted like a hero, super strength aside. I'm hoping that The Avengers movie can put all my misgivings aside and produce a great film.

Ocean Marketing PR Debacle Leads To Internet Crucifixtion

If you haven't already heard about the Ocean Marketing sh*t storm, what's wrong with you? Joking aside, the Ocean Marketing story made the Internet implode upon itself and then regurgitated the finest meme's this side of imgur. We could bore you with the details that have been covered by dozens of other outlets, but what fun would that be? Instead sit back in your cubicle prison and laugh out loud at these absurdly clever meme's.

These meme's are priceless.

Apparently Chistoforo did some name dropping. He was boasting about
how he knew several EIC's from prominent gaming websites (Kotaku, Penny Arcade, IGN, etc)
One of them happened to be IGN's Scott Lowe, who swiftly told the twitter-verse that Christoforo
was "manic and unprofessional". Christoforo's rebuttal was the best burn ever.

Brilliant.

Now that all the dust has settled, Christoforo effectively sabotaged not only his reputation, but his business as well. Let this be a lesson kids. Don't be a douche.

The Kennedys

The Kennedys are one of the most talked about American families, fitting that a drama piece would be made about them. Now remember the show is a fiction, liberties are taken, it’s not 100% accurate to history but it does a fine job of capturing the Kennedy family. The mini series is laced in controversy, for good reason. Corruption and death seem to follow the family during the 60s. It’s a must see drama. The show takes the powerful family and their real life drama and fits it into a perfect 8 part mini series that really gives you a great look at the family.

New Dark Knight Rises Trailer Makes Your Loins Swell

The new Dark Knight trailer makes me moist. I'm talking soggy britches moist. The trailer made its debut during the Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (read our review punks) this past weekend. Apparently it changed the lives of about 130 people in a packed theater. One man was quoted as saying "I've seen the face of glory and his name is Batman". That's a total lie, but I can't stress how perfect a trailer this is. This is how to do a trailer properly

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Review

2009's Sherlock Holmes was a welcome surprise when it came out. It seemed Guy Ritchie (director) had finally found the big budget franchise he was born to make. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law were great together, and the story was wrought with all the mystery we could ask for. By the end of movie, it had become apparent that a sequel was almost mandatory. Sequels, however, can be very dangerous. They can be amazing, mediocre, or simply awful.

It's hard to see where exactly A Game of Shadow's fits into this equation. This time around we follow the brilliant, yet deranged, Holmes as he stalks his arch nemesis Moriarty (played by the one and only Jared Harris of Mad Men fame) in an effort to foil some plan about world domination. There was something in there about money, causing a World War, and killing some people. If it sounds a bit convoluted, that's because it is. A Game of Shadows starts with all the potential in the world, but somewhere along the ride things just fizzle. Where did it all go wrong?

Drawing Sand from the Creative Well

When it comes to good shows I find that eventually they become double edged swords. On one end, the show is so good that you never want it to end. One the other end, sometime shows seem to outlive their quality.

24 was a prime example. It had a large, rabid fanbase. A fanbase that made them tons of money and support to carry them through eight seasons. But the problem with that was: what do you do with a show that prides itself on being shocking and surprising? I was a huge fan of 24, until it seemed like the show became predictable. There was always a mole inside CTU. A member of the President's staff was always truing to undermine him. Nobody ever listens to Jack. Jack was always going around the system to get results. And Jack was never going to have a good day.

Rockstar Games Shows Max Payne 3 Multiplayer Sneak Peak

Rockstar let the guys over at IGN into their secret lair (that's what I think it is) and let them do a hands on preview with the Max Payne 3 Multiplayer. In the new "Gang Wars" mode Rockstar is attempting to combine a few standard multiplayer modes (Deathmatch, CTF) into a narrative driven, round based experience. One example given is your part of a drug bust gone bad so both teams are trying to steal the drugs and money. After one team is successful, a short narrative by Max himself will start and will then lead you into the next rounds objective like defend or attack. (IGN) This sounds similar to something like the Firefight game type in Halo: Reach or the Battlefield 3's Rush mode. The difference should be Rockstars ability to add a great narrative and the grimy feel that the Max Payne franchise offers.

Christopher Nolan talks "Dark Knight Rises" and the type of villain Bane will be.

In an interview with the L.A. Times, Christopher Nolan talks about why he decided to go with Bane as the villain in this Batman film and some of his feelings about this being his last raump with the caped crusader.
When looking at possible canidates for who would be the antagonist in this film Nolan admits at first he only knew the character of Bane by name and had no idea about his origins or abilities. But after getting an education he realized that Bane is "a very cool character".

"With Bane, the physicality is the thing,” Nolan said. “With a good villain you need an archetype, you know, you need the extreme of some type of villainy. The Joker is obviously a particular archetype of diabolical, chaotic anarchy and has a devilish sense of humor. Bane, to me, is something we haven’t dealt with in the films. We wanted to do something very different in this film. He’s a primarily physical villain, he’s a classic movie monster in a way — but with a terrific brain. I think he’s a fascinating character. I think people are going to get a kick out of what we’ve done with him.”

When talking about this being his last Batman film he seems to have some attachment to the series and the characters. Nolan says “I tend not to be too emotional on the set, I find that doesn’t help me do my job,”. “But you definitely get a little lump in your throat thinking that, ‘OK, this is going to be the last time we’re going to be doing this.’ It’s been quite a journey."

Maynard James Keenan Singing Makes For a Badass Transformer's Trailer

The new Transformers: Fall of Cybertron trailer was revealed during the VGA's and what a saucy trailer it was!  The game seems to have a slight cartoonish style but dons a dark theme. Cinematic Director, Dave Cravens said, "we really wanted fans and non-fans alike to look at Transformers like they've never seen it before." This Transformers is definitely something fresh and sets such a stronger emotional appeal than the recent films by Michael Bay, so far.

Maynard's song, The Humbling River, reflects hopelessness and despair on the game's plot and sets a perfect tone for the end of Cybertron. We also were able to see a handful of characters including, Optimus Prime, Bumble Bee, Grimlock, Megatron, and the Combaticons.

Too bad we will have to wait until Fall 2012. Check out both the trailer and the making of the trailer here.

After a weary battle with the Storm Cloak invasion on Whiterun, I have been tasked with a mission to deliver a young man's satchel to his estranged daughter. The man mines at Darkstar, and has no means of communicating with his daughter.

Survivor Series 2011 Recap

I love wrestling. I really do. And last night I was hoping that the WWE would really blow this PPV out of the water. Madison Square Garden. The Rock. All the ingredients were in place for this to be as memorable as this year's Money in the Bank PPV. But...for me...it wasn't.

Now this was a mix of me having to deal with hopefully genius story progression and blatantly crappy storytelling. I'll get this out of the way first, the divas match wasn't the best. I just wish that the WWE would get people to write better plots for these girls. And maybe better ring training. I'd like to see that division get more respect, and I think after the past few months their mindset is to do just that.

Immortals: How It Was A Mount Olympus Sized Waste of Time

Immortals. A movie brought to you by the producers of 300. Ergo, this movie was made to capitalize off of the immense success of 300. Yes Gerald Butler isn't in it. But we have The Tudors Henry Cavill! Yes the majority of the backdrop of this movie was entirely CG, but come on. What movie today isn't puffed up by one of us nerds behind a computer?

Resistance, Halo and the Future of the FPS

I've played many first person shooters. I love them. It's my gaming niche. I can say with confidence that I'm pretty damn good at these games. I enjoy making others weep when I utterly decimate them online. Over the course of time, I've developed strategy to make the AI my bitch. But Resistance made me feel like a small child in a prize fight with Tyson.

Stalk My Friends?!?

I feel like I’ve been using Apples new FindMyFriends app a little more than I should. Don’t get me wrong. Its not like I’m tracking my friends every move, but it is pretty cool to see what they are up to and maybe send off a funny text. Getting over some of the privacy issues I see, this app does make me think about some of the cool and helpful ways it could improve some people’s lives.

FindMyFriends is a simple app, almost to simple, with a very basic setup. You’re not going to need any codes or knowledge of GPS systems to get online. All you need is your Apple ID along with your password and you’ll be signed right into the home screen. From here you can send either a “temporary share location” request and set the time limit for how long you want to be sharing or you can send a permanent share location request. Now this is where I fumbled with the app a little bit. I sent a request to a pal of mine and he accepted so I could then see his location on the map but when I asked if he could see me he said no. He then sent me a location share request that I accepted and then it worked. I guess this is just a safeguard against sharing your location unknowingly. Besides being able to get directions to a friend’s location, this sums up all the functions in the app. It’s definitely not any sort of new extreme social networking tool. Even with a lack of functions, this app definitely opens up some great possibilities for real life situations.

FindMyFriends is a really cheap solution to what is usually a high cost system for small businesses. Imagine the owner of a small delivery company that does nights out on the town and airport runs. It would be convenient to see the location of the cars and their ETA to destinations. With a couple Internet connected iOS devices you have a gps tracking system for your business. Voila.

Apply the same concept to a family of five. It’s a good way for a mom and dad to keep track of the youngings (and keep track of each other). Now if you read the link you could see where this app could start some problems. In a relationship this could be the beginning of the end for some. For anybody reading this who has a significant other that is a little abusive on the telephone/texting, this is not an app you want to make them aware of.

All in all, this app is really great in terms of ease of use and overall design. The iPod/iPhone version looks great and the iPad version is impressive in itself. Again, the app does lack in-depth functionality, but this is also the very beginning of Apples stroll into mostly uncharted territory. Lets see if this is just another one of Apples “hobbies” or the start of something much grander in the Live Social Networking Experience.

RAGE: That's it?

Rage is a gorgeous first person shooter that brings rich apocalyptic landscapes and breath-taking skylines. The textures and detail are amazing to look at and even the weapons feel solid and versatile with different ammunition types. Rage also incorporates fun vehicle gameplay and a basic engineering craft to create sentry bots, exploding RC cars, etc. But, once you start mowing down the mutants and bandits throughout the Wasteland, there really isn’t much else. In other words, the lack of story made me want to shoot myself in the face.

The game kicks off with your character being stowed away in a bunker called an ARC to survive the apocalypse. Brought to you by the most glorious asteroid that annihilates almost all life on the planet. Upon waking up years later after impact you find your fellow crewmates dead in their cryo-beds and you step in to a world where no one likes you. A man named Hagar saves your ass shortly after leaving your cocoon and you start running errands for him. Like killing bandits and stuff, no big deal.

You find out early in the game that you are a special class of soldier that has microscopic robots in your body that regenerate your health, called Nanites. You also have a large bounty on your head by the Authority (a corrupt Government agency) because of your special ability. Luckily, you fell into the hands of the rebelling heroes and are the key to winning the fight for the Resistance. Nothing to ground breaking but it works as a basic story.

The main problem I had with Rage after playing for a few hours was that the story really did not go anywhere. I ran around helping Hagar at his settlement, and some other locals around the Wasteland. You eventually make your way to the first protected town called Wellspring (one of two towns in the game) and start to find your way into the Resistance. But that was pretty much it. Throughout the game you know that the Authority want to control the world with a mechanical fist and that the Resistance just want to be free. There is some extra storyline that connects the mutants that were said to be from the asteroid radiation to the Authority, but nothing to surprising.

The only enjoyable part of the game was traveling through Dead City and encountering the countless amounts of mutants, both small and really damn big. It was terrifying and suspenseful and really put you at the edge of your seat. Plus, (Spoiler Alert) the only real boss in the game.

Towards the end of eight hours of gameplay, you start the main mission to destroy the Authority once and for all. You are given a brand new mini gun with secondary BFG rounds (thank you DOOM) and some advice of caution. Without any deep story to drive me, I was revved up to get chaotic with what was ahead of me. It seemed the game was finally going to pick up. It didn’t. I found myself at the top of an Authority stronghold as I blazed through standard enemies ready for the big boss fight. Instead, I was welcomed with a CG cut scene and the end of the game as I cried out “That’s it?”

Overall, if you want to play a fun FPS with solid gameplay, go for it. If you want to play a game with a great story that makes you want more and more, just walk away from this one.

Resistance 3: Isn’t humanity exterminated yet?

Wrapping up on Sony’s exclusive FPS trilogy, Insomniac creates a game with a more emotional storyline and environment with no hope in sight. At the start of Resistance 3 you are put a handful of years later into the Chimeran invasion after the death of Nathan Hale.

You play as Joseph Cappelli, the man who merc’d Hale at the end of the second game. Joseph is part of a small survival group including his wife and sick son underneath some desolate town. At this point, it looks like what game is there left to play since the introduction leaves you with a situation where the Chimerans have pretty much stomped all over every continent. Don’t forget that the planet is being terra-formed into a cold wasteland too.

So where do we go from here? The plot kicks off with the Doctor who created the antivirus for the Chimeran disease finding Joseph Cappelli and asking for help on a mission to save the world of course. And to do that, you must battle your way to the ultimate end in New York.

Compared to the last Resistance, I was particularly happy with the weapon wheel coming back. Being able to choose from a plethora of weapons in Fall of Man to only carrying two weapons was disappointing in the second installation. Thank you Insomniac for the multi-weapon carnage again.

In Resistance 3, the old favorites were brought back like the Bullseye, Carbine, and Auger. But there were new refreshing additions that spiced up combat like the mutator and cryogun. It was a blast being able to shoot enemies with infected gobs of goop and gas clouds just to see them bubble up and explode. Pun intended.

Unfortunately, my precious air-fuel grenades were taken out of the game and replaced with the EMP grenade. The EMP grenade was mainly used for taking out Stalkers and enemy shields. It was added to give more diversity in killing certain enemies, but I truly didn’t care for them and it was really only necessary in a few battles.

The levels in Resistance 3 did start off rather bleak as many people have said but it is the end of the world in a nutshell. What would you honestly expect from a post alien invasion set to freeze the planet? The color palettes do change further into the game from the depressing browns as you head into the tundra conditions of New York.

Level designs were also much more diverse in their gameplay leaving you to fend off feral Chimera through canals of flooded towns, destroy human renegade vehicles during a speeding train pursuit, and carefully walking through frightening towns and mines to kill the “Demon”. I enjoyed the change in pace very much and it did make Resistance a more dynamic experience.

Overall, Joseph Cappelli’s story is much more heart-felt than the previous games where carnage was the only plot point. I felt the main character’s struggle through a journey he did not want to be a part of but had to for the sake of his family. It gave depth and I appreciated that. Levels designs were more diverse in their gameplay with end of the world scenery and every weapon worked well and packed a punch.

Red Dead Redemption: How the West was won...and my heart as well. By: Eric Colon

Let me just start this off by saying: I don't just "play" video games. I emmerse myself into them. The story, the landscape and the characters; everything. I was emotionally invested in ridding Sera from the Locust Horde. I wanted to see Nathan Drake stick it to that warlord just as badly as he did. I get into the character. So if I refer to certain characters in this game with such distain, it's because they might as well have wronged me personally.

Red Dead Redmption was a story about a man named John Marsten. A former outlaw turned family man, he is forced by these douchebag US Marshals, to set out on a mission to bring his old gangmates to justice in order to save his kidnapped wife and son. This is an epic game (in length and awesomeness). It took me about 15 hrs to beat. Some parts in this game really pissed me off, but in the process, got me more attached to the characters and the story line. This is something that Rockstar usually does in their games, and does well.

It's your basic GTA formula but with a western twist. Horseback is your primary form of travel. Strangers calling out to your in distress can bring about interesting detours from your main objective. At one point, I saw a damsel in distress calling out to me from what appeared to be her broken down horse and buggy. As I approached her to boost my honor meter, six armed bandits hopped out and ambushed me. I took them down judiciously with my six shooter as the damsel pleaded with me to spare her from the fates of her cohorts. Of course, I let her live, I'm the hero not the outlaw. Another instance there was a hitchhiker on a mountain pass that threw me off my horse as I attempted to give a lift. He didnt get too far after I implanted a bullet in his dome. And this was all on the way to my first mission....

Now I wish I could give you all the details and plot twists right now, but (in my humble opinion) I'd be robbing you all of something as equally as important as the sweet gameplay and infinetly more important than the superb graphics: the story. That's the hook that pulls me along the story as I struggle through the dangerous roads and degenerate lowlifes that I encounter in Rockstar's acid western.

The multiplayer is, in my opinion the living embodiment of the wild west. As soon as your character lands in a free roam session, it's everyman for himself as "The Quick and the Dead" meets "World of Warcraft". Upon rolling into a town, with my posse of XBL friends, and seeing other players on the map head for the hills in fear of my double barrel or Jay's sniper is a sight to behold. Clearing out gang hideouts and gunning down your fellow players is the name of the game. Leveling up gives you new steeds, guns and characters to choose from.

I had more lumps in my throat at the end of this game than the lumps of coals I got from Santa last year. Play it. For the love of God....play this game.

How Mass Effect 2 Taught Me To Love Again

Where do I start? What do I say that hasn't already been said?

games(TM)

"Despite all of the ways Mass Effect 2 is more engaging to play and explore, after 35 remarkable hours it was the characters that stayed with us… Game of the year in January? Oh, go on then." [Feb 2010, p.112]
Okay I'm excited.
GameDaily
"Mass Effect 2 far exceeded our expectations and is without question one of the best games we've played. Use whatever positive description you'd like. System seller, potential game of the year, landmark achievement; just make sure you buy it immediately."
Absolutely spot on.
GamePro
"An improvement on just about every aspect of the original game, with the exception of one tiny aspect; the very final battle. Mass Effect 2 sees BioWare's approach to the role playing genre evolve beyond anything they've worked on previously, and gives us a glimpse of how both RPGs and shooters will begin to merge in the years ahead."
Thank you John Davison.

I have invested more time into Mass Effect 2 than I care to admit. Oh who the hell am I kidding? I have completed the game three times, I have a level 30 soldier, a Level 12 Infiltrator, played every side quest, had sex with an alien, and you know what? I want to do it all over again. This game is the future, the benchmark, blah blah blah, insert cliche here-it is unapologetic about the fact that it is the shit.

Bioware was bold enough to make the necessary changes to make the game play better, feel better, and look better. It is undoubtedly better, faster, and stronger. All that is fine and dandy, but the real charm behind Mass Effect 2 is its narrative. This is one of the few games available that has both a solid script and stellar voice acting. In short, Mass Effect 2 is perfect.
It is a perfect marriage of RPG and Shooter. I rejoiced when all the tedious micro-management aspects of the first game were eliminated. Now you simply allocate points to which powers you want, and voila! Instant Billy Bad Ass. On the shooter side of things, the mechanics are far more polished. No more clunky shooter for you, no sir. It plays like Gears of War 2, except with all these awesome biotic super powers added for good measure.
For those of you who are moaning about the lack of stat crunching, I'm sorry, but piss off. This is the evolution of the western RPG (isn't that the only kind now? Pppssshhhh, turn based RPG's are for chumps.). Others have tried to blend these two genres to no avail, and have got one part right, but failed horribly on the other. Bioware nailed it hook, line, and effin' sinker.

These fine folks created a world I wanted to get lost in, characters I cared about, and women I wanted to sleep with. It's mature, ballsy, and a step in the right direction.
I applaud the team at Bioware, who knows the hell they had to go through, but God bless you people. It's because of you that I'm no longer the jaded negative nancy douchebag troll who laments about how games just aren't what they used to be. I was going through one of my dry spells, I had grown tired of games, and so I decided to take a break. My cousin was borrowing my 360, until every notable game site was verbally masturbating to this game. That's when I promptly stole my system back and went to town on ME2 for four days. Best. Sex. Ever. Bottom line, ME2 is responsible for making me fall in love with games again, I'm no longer the jaded prick who thinks he knows more about this than everyone. I've been humbled, slapped in the face, and redeemed.

My name is Jonathan Ortiz, and I'm a recovering douche. My sponsor? Bioware. We meet once a day, and I'm reminded of the man I once was. I love games again. I don't over-analyze games, talk about games as art, talk about games being taken seriously, and I simply get lost in the experience. That's what its about people. So shut your mouths, play the damn game, and be glad that there are people as creative as the team at Bioware. This certainly isn't their first rodeo.
